Global Edmonton Announces New Weather Anchor On Global News Morning

EDMONTON, February 2, 2023 – Global Edmonton announced today that weather specialist Phil Darlington is joining the city's #1 morning news program, Global News Morning starting February 2, 2023. Phil, who is currently the weather specialist for Global Edmonton's Global News at 11, replaces long-time, beloved weather specialist, Mike Sobel, who retired in December 2022.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that Phil Darlington is the new, permanent weather anchor on Global News Morning," said Jim Haskins, Station Manager/News Director, Global Edmonton. "Phil is extremely likable, versatile and able to move seamlessly between delivering the weather forecast and conducting in-studio interviews on a myriad of subjects. He is a fantastic addition to the team."

Born and raised in Toronto, Ont., Phil launched his journalism career at Toronto's Excalibur and then transitioned to TV, working at Rogers as a general assignment reporter, a video journalist and weather anchor at CKPR in Thunder Bay and a weather specialist at CTV Regina. He holds a Broadcast Journalism diploma from Seneca College and a Bachelor of Communications degree from York University.

"I am thrilled to be joining the morning team," said Phil Darlington. "Everyone on and off the air are stellar. I am looking forward to bringing the forecast and plenty of laughs to our viewers. It's a total one-eighty from my role on Global News at 11, but as they say, 'the early bird...needs the coffee'."

Since moving to Edmonton in 2018 to join Global Edmonton, viewers have appreciated Phil's easy-going charisma, wit and the pride he takes in how to best tell the weather story and how it impacts the viewers.
