JAZZ.FM91 Presents: The Third Season of Discover Women In Jazz

In partnership with the Pat and Tony Adams Freedom Fund for the Arts, JAZZ.FM91 is proud to present the third season of Discover Women in Jazz.

JAZZ.FM91 is dedicated to entertaining, inspiring and uniting the community through inclusive high-quality programming, education and storytelling. As Canada's only 24/7 all-jazz radio broadcaster and a registered charity, JAZZ.FM91 has a responsibility to push for greater equality and diversity.

This concert series promotes, champions and highlights women's contributions to jazz as musicians, composers, lyricists and bandleaders. It has featured artists such as Joy Lapps, Debi Botos, Nicky Schrire and more, who have also been featured in our Sound of Jazz Concert series and/or local jazz festivals.

Discover Women in Jazz features five artists from the Greater Toronto Area selected by an informed panel that includes three members of JAZZ.FM91's new Alumni Committee — musicians and entrepreneurs Agneya Chikte, Chelsea McBride, and Jesse Ryan — and one JAZZ.FM91 board member, educator Catherine Mitro.

Through this program, JAZZ.FM91 offers these talented women support, space, funding and marketing to foster their careers.

Concerts will be broadcast live to air and livestreamed to YouTube each Thursday during August between 7 and 8 p.m. ET.

Plus, tune in to JAZZ.FM91 each Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET throughout August to get to know more about this year's artists on Jazzology, supported by RBC Emerging Artists.

MEET THE ARTISTS

Lauren Falls

Lauren Falls is a sought-after, Juno-nominated bassist, composer, and bandleader who has been making her mark both on the Toronto and New York jazz scenes. Falls has an undeniably strong command of the bass and is in demand both as a side person and bandleader.

Sabine Ndalamba

Sabine Ndalamba is always on a quest to establish the musical heartbeat of a compelling story as a composer, guitarist and singer-songwriter. Her music has traversed many mediums from stage to screen through collaborative work in film, games, theatre, art installations, and dance stages.

Emma Cava

Vocalist, composer, lyricist, and arranger Emma Cava makes music for listeners sitting at the edge of the room, who, like herself, aren't sure where they belong. Cava's composition style takes cues from jazz-adjacent bandleaders like Frank Zappa and Nellie McKay, delivering earworm melodies and attention-grabbing harmonies with finesse and a wry sense of humour.

Virginia MacDonald

Known for her lyrical and soulful clarinet playing, Virginia MacDonald has been described as a "powerful new voice in the Canadian scene" by Juno -winning bassist Mike Downes. She is a highly in-demand bandleader, sidewoman, and composer, and regularly performs across Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Jen Lo

Jen Lo is a classically trained jazz pianist, composer, and educator who has studied with many great Canadian jazz pianists including David Restivo, Noam Lemish, Mark Eisenman, and David Braid. Lo is an active member of the Toronto jazz community, performing regularly in various venues around the city.
