THE RETURN OF COUNTRY TO TIMMINS RADIO

THE RETURN OF COUNTRY TO TIMMINS RADIO

May 20, 2022 - Timmins, ON - CHMT 93.1 has been a fixture in Timmins, Ontario since its launch in 2001 as Mix 93. A year later, a flip was made, and country music permeated from the speakers until 2006 when The Moose 93.1 FM was born, playing Timmins’ Biggest Variety. In 2020, we tweaked our format a little more, evolving into Timmins’ Classic Hits station.

However... Country music has never really left Timmins. After all, one of the biggest names in country music history, Shania Twain, hails from Timmins. The lifestyle also mirrors Northern Ontario living to a tee. And year after year, we get asked questions like “why is there no Country station?” or “can you add at least some Country music?”

So after 16 years with no Country music station in Timmins... COUNTRY MUSIC IS BACK!!

At 8am on Friday (May 20th, 2022), 93.1 The Moose officially became Country 93.1, Timmins’ Best Country. The first song was “Play Something Country” by the legendary Brooks & Dunn. It was chosen as a nod to all the people who have asked us to “play something country” for the last 16 years.

This is following on the heels of success that Vista had with their North Bay country station launch in 2021 of CFCH 90.5 FM, North Bay’s Best Country. CFCH shot immediately to Number 1 in North Bay, which is a similar market to Timmins.

General Manager Peter Hobbs says; “We are thrilled to be bringing Country music back to Timmins, after being absent for far too many years. This change has been a long time in coming and with plenty of hard work from the entire team at Vista Radio, Country 93.1’s well-crafted mix of new Country and some familiar favorites has been proven to draw the biggest audiences in markets like Timmins” he explained. "Today's Country music simply represents all that is great about our amazing Northern Ontario lifestyle."

With the musical change, there is still plenty staying the same. Our commitment to being local...or as we like to say #LocalMatters, will remain as strong as ever. We’ll still have live weekday announcers from 6am until 6pm, with a primary focus on local news and weather, and a major presence in the community.

Country 93-1 will mix new Country with familiar favourites. JJ Murray will take on morning show duties with the “JJ Murray Show”. Shane Button, who’s been on CHMT since 2013, delivers midday entertainment by hosting “At Work with Shane Button”, and rounding out the day is Drivin’ Home with Tyler Cropley. The local news coverage keeping you up to date will be spearheaded by News Director Bob McIntyre. Weekends will see the iconic Bob Kingsley Country Top 40 with Fitz finding a home Saturdays 10am-2pm & Sundays 6-10pm. The Legendary Breakfast hosted by Drew Ferris will run Sunday mornings 8-10am.

Regional Cluster Program Director for Ontario North, Shane Button says; “the Country lifestyle and Northern Ontario go hand in hand; blue collar, outdoors, and hardworking residents. The music hits home, and with the voices of listeners growing every year asking for country music, it was the perfect time”.
