The idea that a human being living in Canada could be denied housing for any reason is unthinkable. After all, we are one of the most progressive nations in the world. Right?
This eight-part series, an original 99.3 CountyFM production, shines a light on homelessness in Hastings Prince Edward. The series launches on April 6th at 12:10pm on the Grapevine. It continues every Thursday until May 25th. The program is rebroadcast on Thursdays at 6:10pm. The series is produced into approximately twenty-minute long fully produced segments including original music.
Over the past eight months, volunteers from the radio station spoke to and interviewed more than 60 individuals in and around the local homeless community and organizations that serve them. These are the voices of homelessness past and present, and the people trying to help them today.
We give voice to the community, dive into the many factors involved in why people are homeless, who they are, the barriers they face, and we bring people to the table to share what they are doing to find solutions. The "Voices from the Shadows" stories are uplifting, surprising, and gut-wrenchingly hard to imagine for those of us who have never experienced such challenges.
A powerful video was produced to introduce you to the series. You can watch the video here https://youtu.be/IUlHBw6u8MI
Dave MacKay, Volunteer
"This is a hard topic, the interview experience was emotionally taxing even for seasoned interviewers. The number of "unhomed" that came forward to tell their stories was motivating in getting their input experience to our listeners. I am proud to have led this project."
Craig Mills, General Manager
"We are proud to provide a platform for these important voices of our community. A dedicated group of excellent volunteers and our small but mighty staff have been working on this series since last summer. We are pleased to be partnering with the Community Radio Fund of Canada on this important and timely series."
Jim JJ Johnston, Chair of the Board
"As the Chair of the Board for 99.3 CountyFM, it never ceases to amaze me the incredibly meaningful work our team does to delve into what's going in our community. It's refreshing to go beyond the headlines, and shed light on issues impacting our community. This is an exceptional piece of journalism and I am very proud of the efforts made by our talented and dedicated volunteers and staff."
