SENIOR MANAGER, TALK PROGRAMMING

REPORTING TO THE VICE PRESIDENT, PROGRAMMING & OPERATIONS

Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Talk Programming is responsible for the management of all talk programming across current affairs, entertainment, and comedy. This role will plan, organize, direct and evaluate programming aligned with established department and corporate objectives on all Talk formats. The Senior Manager, Talk Programming will be responsible for managing all staffing, financials, and other resources that contribute to the performance and success of the department.  

 

Accountabilities

 

Programming

• Oversee Talk broadcast programming and digital content to ensure the highest possible quality experience is presented. This includes setting daily on-air segments and schedules, production of specialty programming, and ensuring compliance with all CRTC-related conditions.

• Ensure that programming initiatives are in line with corporate objectives and key performance indicators (KPIs).

• Develop programming that targets audience growth segments and evolving customer trends.

• Monitor channel and programming performance through data and other measures (consumption metrics, customer feedback, social engagement, etc.).

• Management of Talk programming staff, including on-air talent, producers, and contributors. This includes day-to-day supervision, coaching/mentoring and career development, and overall performance management.

• Lead cross-functional collaboration to promote Talkprogramming across social, event marketing, CRM, digital and other channels as opportunities arise.

• Collaborate and partner with cross-functional teams to improve retention and conversion objectives.

• Management of all financial aspects of the channel,including staffing, resources and miscellaneous expenses.

 

Growth

• Focus on target audience segments, creating programming and opportunities that foster growth and engagement.

• Perform regular channel audits, generating reports and analysis for senior leadership.

• Work with SiriusXM US to ensure that Talk programming opportunities are in line with overall corporate objectives.

• Establish in-app strategy for Talk programming content, working closely with both Canadian & US stakeholders.

• Oversee and monitor content for digital, in-app, on-demand and other platforms as required.

• Build strategic partnerships that deliver unique content and growth opportunities, with measurable KPIs.

 

Relationship Management

• Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with content partners, including regular meetings and ongoing communications related to programming.

• Build and manage relationships with industry stakeholders and partners.

• Work professionally with hosts, technical producers, guests, and co-workers.

• Lead and participate in group meetings; prepare status updates as required.

• Attend industry and consumer events on behalf of SiriusXM, as needed.

 

Technical

• Supervise operation of broadcast studio equipment used for live broadcasts and pre-recorded programs, from SiriusXM studio or remotely; train staff as needed.

• Respond to malfunctions in accordance with established procedures, notify broadcast operations personnel of need for equipment repair or other technical issues.

 

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

 

Level of Education

• Completion of a post-secondary radio and television arts program, or related studies.

 

Job Related Experience

• Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience, with demonstrated background and expertise in live broadcast production, with a focus on current affairs and entertainment.

• Experience with digital media consumption and distribution.

• Extensive experience with managing teams, including resource and performance management.

 

Skills and Background

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Highly organized and detail oriented.

• Effective problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to changing situations.

• Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.

• Ability to work under shifting deadlines in an active environment.

• Thorough knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

• Proficiency with project management and collaboration tools (Google Drive, Monday.com, etc.).

• Ability to operate audio equipment used for live programs and broadcasts an asset.
