About the Role:

 

Global News Kingston is looking for a full-time Producer to oversee and support production of news across all platforms, with focus on CKWS News at 6 and 11. This individual will be a proven leader who has a track record of making fast and sound decisions based on news values and high standards. Reporting to the News Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for setting and preparing the lineup for the 6PM News each day, planning coverage, contributing to the news direction of Global News Kingston, corresponding with producers across the Global News Network, and actively promoting the multi-platform approach to local news dissemination. This person will be responsible for supporting news assignment and the Videographer team on a daily basis.

 

You will contribute by: 

 

  • Review and approve (“vet”) scripts in a way that provides constructive and supportive feedback to Videographers

  • Contribute viable and newsworthy story suggestions to the assignment desk

  • Ensure overall news direction as communicated by leadership is followed and supported

  • Meet with assignment, management and producers to contribute to the coverage priorities of Global News Kingston

  • Identify and curate National and International content from the broader Global News network

  • Set broadcast news lineups for CKWS News at 6 and CKWS News at 11.

  • Delegate various production related tasks to Operations staff as needed

  • Monitor news sources, including feeds, wires, and social media for potential coverage

  • Coordinate the pursuit of breaking news - including planning live coverage

  • Coordinate updates for breaking or developing stories.

  • Establish and maintain a network of news contacts throughout Kingston and the surrounding region.

  • Actively support and promote a digital-first workflow, including online articles, social media updates and streaming platform contributions (OTT)

  • Understanding and adhering to Global News’ Journalistic Principles and Practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Skills and experience you will bring:

 

  • Minimum 5 years in a broadcast journalism supervisory role required

  • Minimum 15 years of experience in broadcast and online journalism required

  • A demonstrable passion for current affairs and news, with a keen interest in developing skills to grow the presence of Global News in the Kingston market across all platforms

  • Superior grammar with excellent news writing and storytelling skills.

  • Superior non-linear editing skills

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree in Broadcast Journalism.

  • The ability to effectively solve problems and trouble-shoot while dealing with the unexpected.

  • The ability to handle the demands and pressure of tight deadlines and breaking news.

  • The ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced and highly demanding environment.

  • Superior communication and organization skills.

  • Extensive knowledge of current affairs in Southeastern Ontario.

  • A positive attitude in all circumstances

  • Strong collaborative leadership skills

  • The proven ability to lead by example.
