Broadcast Operations TECHNICIAN (contract)

Job Summary

The Broadcast Operations Technician is responsible for the reliable, high-quality operation of all live and recorded broadcast environments. This role supports broadcast, podcast, and performance studios and works closely with production, engineering, and IT teams to ensure uninterrupted broadcasts, clean signal flow, and secure systems. The Broadcast Operations Technician handles day-to-day studio operations while also contributing to long-term technical planning and reliability.

Accountabilities


Broadcast Operations

Install, configure, test, operate, and maintain broadcast equipment including consoles, microphones, processors, patch bays, IP codecs, and digital interfaces.

Diagnose and repair hardware, software, and signal-flow issues across studios and control rooms.

Perform preventative maintenance to ensure long-term system stability, troubleshoot technical issues as they arise.


Programming Production Support

Provide real-time technical support for live radio, streaming broadcasts, podcasts, interviews, and performances.

Work closely with producers, directors, hosts, and on-air talent to support smooth production execution.

Respond quickly to routing changes, console reconfiguration, mic swaps, and emergency recoveries.

Set-up and operate equipment for remote location activities as required.

Provide after-hours on-call broadcast support as required.


Studio Technical Operation

Operate and configure consoles, automation systems, hybrid phone systems, monitor mixes, and routing interfaces.

Set up and manage multitrack audio and video recording sessions with proper gain structure and signal flow.

Ensure all studio spaces are always broadcast-ready.


Other Duties

Asset management and equipment tracking.

Capital planning and lifecycle management.

IT collaboration to maintain secure, compliant broadcast systems.

Systems administration and software management, including broadcast software, automation systems, DAWs, control software and utilities.

Broadcast coordination with external partners for live feeds and licensed broadcasts.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements


Level of Education

Completion of a post-secondary broadcast arts/engineering program, or related studies.


Job Related Experience

2-5 years of experience in broadcast engineering, audio engineering, electronics, or a related field.


Skills and Background

Strong understanding of professional audio, digital and analog signal flow, and IP-based broadcast systems.

Experience with broadcast automation and playout systems such as Zetta or Dalet.

Familiarity with DAWs like Pro Tools or Adobe Audition and multitrack workflows.

Solid knowledge of computer systems, networked audio such as Dante or AES67, and IP routing.

Experience with both Apple and PC operating systems.

Ability to work with IT teams to diagnose and resolve network-related issues.

Proven ability to resolve complex technical problems quickly, particularly during live broadcasts.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with technical and non-technical teams.

Highly organized; must demonstrate a high attention to detail.

Effective problem-solving skills, with the ability to adapt to changing situations.

Excellent time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task.

Ability to work under shifting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Calm, focused approach under pressure.

Thorough knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Proficiency with project management and collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Monday.com, etc.).


Communications

This position is frequently called upon to reach agreement with others in order to complete work activities; requires presenting a point of view at times and influence others to adopt a course of action.
