Position Summary:
MBC is seeking a skilled and reliable Afternoon News Anchor/Reporter to deliver timely and accurate newscasts while also contributing original reporting focused on Indigenous, local, regional, and provincial stories. This position combines on-air broadcasting with field reporting and story production, aligned with MBC’s commitment to Indigenous and community-focused journalism.
The successful candidate will have strong editorial judgment, a professional on-air presence, and the ability to produce high-quality, multi-platform news content under tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
On-Air News Anchoring
• Prepare, write, and deliver afternoon newscasts, including clear and engaging scriptwriting for:
o 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., and 5:00 p.m. newscast times.
o Sports reports to be aired at 4:05 p.m. and 5:05 p.m.(when required to read out live).
• Edit and voice pre-recorded news segments and feature interviews for the North at Noon.
News Reporting & Story Development
• Pitch, research, and produce news stories with a focus on Indigenous, local, regional, and provincial issues.
• Conduct interviews, gather audio, and take photos on location.
Field Work
• Attending press conferences, community events, and other relevant news opportunities in and around Prince Albert.
• Take quality photographs and gather audio clips for on-air and online use.
• Represent MBC News professionally while in the field, building and maintaining community and organizational contacts.
Collaboration & Editorial Support
• Work closely with the Director of News and News team members to ensure editorial consistency.
• Support newsroom operations by assisting with editing scripts, scheduling interviews, and mentoring junior staff or interns when applicable.
• Assist in filling in for colleagues during absences or vacation periods. (Sports and Morning Anchor).
Technical Proficiency
• Operate newsroom systems including Word Press, KLZ, ENCO, and OMNY for news playout and audio management.
• Conduct online research using credible sources to verify facts and gather story background.
Qualifications:
• Experience in news reporting and/or anchoring (radio/broadcast/podcast).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent news judgment with a commitment to ethical journalism and MBC’s Indigenous-focused mandate.
• Familiarity with newsroom software such as KLZ, ENCO, OMNY, and Microsoft Office tools.
• Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel for assignments as needed.
Working Conditions:
• Shifts typically start at 9 a.m. and final newscast is at 5:00 p.m.
• Field reporting required for community events and story coverage.
• Fast-paced, supportive newsroom environment committed to accurate and inclusive news reporting.
Compensation
• An annual salary starts at $42,000, depending on previous experience.
• Benefits include Life & AD&D (after three months); Long term disability, extended health, dental, and vision coverage (after six months).
• MBC has a group registered pension that employees may opt out of; or contribute too; MBC will match 4% of the salary to the RRSP if the employee opts to contribute to RRSP.
• Three weeks of paid annual vacation.
